The most basic hinge, the pivot hinge, was in use in by 1600 BCE (Before Common Era), based on archeological evidence from the ancient city of Hattusa. The pivot hinge is simply a post that rests in a socket or ring of stone, wood, or metal. This basic hinge design allows a door to swing fully open in both directions, or be blocked on one side to stop. Because of this feature, pivot hinges have been passed down through history and are still around everywhere, though in slightly fancier form. Saloon-style doors and bathroom stall doors are often mounted by pivot hinges.
When it"s time to do a remodeling job on the cabinet doors or cabinets, themselves, it is always a good time to think about replacing the cabinet hinges on them. You could stick with the factory standard pieces that come with many cabinets, but you could also have a little more fun with your décor, and choose cabinet hinges that suit the style of home you are trying to create. Often when you are getting new cabinets, you can ask that there be no holes placed in them, until you figure out what hinges you want to attach. That way, there won;t be any patch up work if the cabinet hinges you choose don;t fit the current cabinet holes.
Cabinet door hinges are one of the biggest afterthoughts in home design but they often get the biggest workout in the home. Nary an hour goes by that someone isn;t opening a cabinet somewhere in the home, whether it;s in the kitchen, pantry, bathroom or hallway.
Pivot hinges are made for overlay doors which are doors that rest over the door frame. One is attached to the top and one to the bottom. Portions of each are then folded over and recessed into the door and frame resulting in a concealed hinge. If open cabinets are a pet peeve of yours then the ever popular spring-loaded or self-closing hinge is for you. Built with a small spring inside the door automatically closes after it is opened. You;ll never be annoyed by open cabinets again.
If you go with hidden hinges, the chances are good you are looking to simply replace the cabinet hinges you already have. In this case you want to make sure that you buy ones that are similar to the ones you have already been using because how they are fitted to the wood is specific to a particular type of cabinet hinges.
Similar to the butt hinge but used only on flush doors; doors that rest within the frame, are butterfly hinges. These cabinet door hinges are also constructed with two flaps with screw holes held together by a pin. The difference is these hinges are mounted on the outside of the door and frame giving your cabinet a decorative touch. They are available in several styles to suit your taste ranging from colonial to art deco and more.
The settlement of the West brought on even more demand for hinges for all of the new homestead-building. Even the "etailgate"e of the iconic Conestoga wagon relied on hinges as did the toolbox sometimes mounted on the side of the wagon. Initially, the blacksmiths were concerned with production and quality. Eventually, they had more time to create items that were both functional and esthetically pleasing.
