Besides type hinges also come in a wide variety of finishes. If you like a vintage look, go for antique copper, brass or pewter. Keep it simple with black nickel, flat black, or white. If you like a modern European look, go for polished chrome or satin nickel. Recreate your grandma;s fifties kitchen with oil rubbed bronze hinges or go for something different with red bronze. No matter what finish you choose it is important that it matches your motif. You can even match your hinges with your cabinet knobs and drawer pulls.
Flush cabinet doors are often seen with butterfly hinges. These cabinet hinges consist of two flaps or leaves with screw holes held together by a pin. They are mounted on the outside of the door and frame and look like a butterfly when open; hence the name. These cabinet hinges are ornamental and can add style to any room form colonial to art deco and beyond. A cabinet hinge similar to this is a butt hinge only the flaps are recessed into the door and frame revealing only the pin when closed. Balls or finials can be added to the pin for decoration. The butt hinge can be used on any door.
No matter what type of cabinet door hinge and finish you choose you should be happy with the results. A cabinet door hinge may be small and it may be overlooked, but without them we wouldn;t have cabinets, we would simply have shelves. And sometimes things are better left hidden behind closed doors.
Over a glass of wine with friends, an architect friend of mine and I started talking about hinges. And yes, I know you are thinking what an exciting conversation that must have been. But when you think about it, hinges are everywhere and affect all aspects of our lives. In fact, you probably have at least five hinged items on your person or in your purse/attaché/backpack/briefcase. You might have less, but I think you;ll be surprised as you read on.
If you have folding doors you might use a Soss hinge. Named for its inventor this door hinge is recessed into the door edges so when the door is folded it is completely concealed. It must be installed exactly or it will not work.
So how, on a practical level, do you find out if you need to buy left-handed or right-handed hinges? Listen up. Go to the door, window or lid and grab the handle. Open the door (or window, or lid). If you grabbed the handle with your left hand and the door opened, either towards you or away from you, then you are dealing with a left-handed hinge. Note this down carefully; left-handed hinge.
Even small accessory items in your home can wear a new face with decorative hinges. Take a jewelry box or armoire for example, that may have been passed down from generation to generation, and now reposes on your bureau. Those small pieces of hardware may be becoming stiff and rusty, making the lid more difficult to open. Simply by replacing the old, tired hinges with new decorative hinges will ensure the piece will be in the best condition possible to hand down to future generations, with your own personal added touch.
