Garage doors are usually attached with T-hinges. Shaped like the letter T the horizontal part is attached to the door frame while the vertical part is attached to the door. These hinges can be plain or ornamental and lift up rather than out.
If you have an overlay door you will need pivot hinges. One is attached to the top and the other to the bottom of a door, and portions of each are recessed into the door and frame creating a concealed hinge. Flush doors commonly use butterfly hinges. These hinges are so named because they look like a butterfly when opened. They consist of two flaps with screw holes held together by a pin. They mount on the outside of the door and jamb or frame for a unique decorative look. You;ll find them in multiple styles ranging from colonial to art deco and beyond to suit your personal taste.
When your door hinges have gone past their prime, you can"t always find matching hinges to replace the ones that had treated you so well, for so long. So, your only option is to replace all the hinges on a door and if there are more doors in the room, you;ll probably have to replace those as well, or else that one hinge will be a tacky standout.
Squeaks happen. They"re natural, but that doesn"t mean you have to live with them. When you first hear the squeaky door hinge, you need to decide what is causing it. Maybe it really does need some grease. Squirt a little WD40 in there and see if that solves the problem. If not, maybe one of the screws has come a little loose. Grab a screw driver and tighten them up to see if that makes a difference. Only tighten them as far as they need to go, don"t keep twisting thinking you"ll make it stop squeaking if you tighten the screw enough, that"s only going to hurt your cabinet surface. If these solutions don"t work, it"s time to go on a hunt for replacement hinges.
Makeup compacts open with them. Your cell phone flips open with a spring-loaded hinge. Clip earrings rely on hinges. So do eyeglasses. The laptop I am writing this on opens with two of them. Some purses have hinge clasps; others have straps attached with hinges. Toolboxes, briefcases, humidors. Kitchen tongs, can openers, coffee pots. Copiers have about a bazillion hinges; every time you open a door or flip a part up to free a paper jam, you are using a hinge or two.
Available in a vast array of styles, sizes and colors hinges not only make your life easier they also make a room complete. The only way to get a complete idea of what is out there in the world of hinges is to do a little online shopping. Sure you could trek to all the hardware stores in your neighborhood and dig through endless boxes that may only hold a few hinges when you need twenty or more. But wouldn;t you prefer to sit at home and find what you need with the click of a button? Yes you would.
By and large one of the most important inventions for everyday use isn;t very large at all. Because of cabinet door hinges we are able to store things away behind doors that previously would have been on shelves. Although originally used in 1600 B.C., the Romans adapted the hinge for home use. Flash forward to the American colonies and hinges were used everywhere. Eventually they were outfitted for the doors of wagons heading west most prominently by Charles Hager in St. Louis. He founded the present day Hager Hardware Company and in the 1900;s received a patent for the compact butt hinge and the rest as they say is history.
