When your door hinges have gone past their prime, you can"t always find matching hinges to replace the ones that had treated you so well, for so long. So, your only option is to replace all the hinges on a door and if there are more doors in the room, you;ll probably have to replace those as well, or else that one hinge will be a tacky standout.
When you are shopping for door hinges to use, you may find yourself marveling at all the designs on the market, but you need to keep a few details in mind. There are two choices in door hinges - removable pin or fixed pin. Which one you want will depend on if you ever need to take the door off. Removable pin doors allow you pop the door down should you need to do something like move a piece of furniture through a doorway that is a little too skinny for the furniture pieces. Also make sure to look at how your door hinges are currently constructed and that any bolt on the new door hinges won;t interfere with your molding.
Sometimes it is the smallest of things that make the biggest difference. Look at the hinge for instance. Some say it is the greatest invention after the wheel. It is used every day in every home and we couldn;t live without them.
But when door hinges become a bit unhinged from years of use, they can not only cause doors to squeak, stick or rub, but allow heat to escape and cold to enter. Maintaining your door hinges is a simple process, something you can do once or twice a year. And it will keep your hinges working properly for years to come.
There a lot of different hinges on the market today. They vary in size, thickness and use. Some are even marked left or right handed depending on what side of the door you are going to use them on. This doesn;t really matter though because you can simply flip them over and they become left or right handed as needed. You also really can"t go to small because of the strength of hinges. They are generally eight to ten times stronger than the job they are doing so as long as they are proportional to the door you needn;t worry.
They;re small. They;re used every day. And when they don;t match with a room;s décor they can really stick out. No they aren;t cabinet knobs. They;re hinges. First used in 1600 B.C. they have increased the strength of man nearly tenfold and are perhaps one of the most important inventions for everyday use.
Although steel is one of the most common materials for hinges, they can also be manufactured from brass, bronze or aluminum. However, even when the hinge is constructed of brass or bronze, the pins on a high-quality hinge are still manufactured from steel for increased durability. In addition, hinges designed for the heaviest of doors and highest usage typically are only made in steel due to its strength and durability.
