A hinge, in itself, is a work of simplicity; simply a joint that connects two objects; easy to understand, easy to install and easy to use. While many types of hinges are hidden, just as many are openly functional, and can actually be decorative.
Pivot cabinet hinges are made for overlay doors. They are mounted on the bottom and top of the door with portions of each hinge bent over and mounted to the frame and the door resulting in a concealed hinge. They like all cabinet hinges are available in multiple finishes to match you style. One of the most popular types of cabinet hinge is the spring loaded or self - closing hinge. A small spring within the hinges forces the door to close on its own. These work wonders in the kitchen where you are commonly in and out of several cabinets daily.
Cabinet door hinges are one of the biggest afterthoughts in home design but they often get the biggest workout in the home. Nary an hour goes by that someone isn;t opening a cabinet somewhere in the home, whether it;s in the kitchen, pantry, bathroom or hallway.
Even small accessory items in your home can wear a new face with decorative hinges. Take a jewelry box or armoire for example, that may have been passed down from generation to generation, and now reposes on your bureau. Those small pieces of hardware may be becoming stiff and rusty, making the lid more difficult to open. Simply by replacing the old, tired hinges with new decorative hinges will ensure the piece will be in the best condition possible to hand down to future generations, with your own personal added touch.
If dealing with cabinet doors the type of hinge you use will depend on the door type. There are three door types; lipped, flush and overlay. A lipped door has a lip cut around it and works well with most hinges. A flush door rests within the frame and works well with butterfly hinges. A butterfly hinge works like a butt hinge but is hung on the outside and is more ornamental ranging in styles from colonial to art deco.
They type of hinge you choose depends on the type of door you have as well as your tastes. There are three types of door, lipped, overlay and flush. Lipped doors have a lip around them, an overlay door rests on the door frame and a flush door rests within the frame. If you have an overlay door a popular hinge that works well is the pivot hinge. A decorative butterfly hinge works well on flush doors while some hinges work on all three types. A well-liked hinge that works on all doors is the spring loaded hinge. This hinge has a spring in it that makes the door close all by itself. Once you find the right hinge your project will be complete.
Advances in metalworking seem to have made a big difference in hinge development. All archeologists have discovered is that pivot posts and sockets were eventually reinforced with metal and several centuries later, cast iron strap hinges became common. Early examples of this type of hinge can be seen throughout Europe. You can also see how the simple strap hinge became more ornate. By the 1600s, smithies were busy forging many items for household use, among this list were a variety of hinges.
