Most people only think about hinges when they are staring at a pesky, painted-over door hinge, trying to remove the pin so they can move a new piece of furniture into the room. But even then, the most attention the hinge probably gets is a few choice curse words. How poor we treat the hinge, especially since some historians consider it an invention on par with the wheel. The simple hinge has simply changed our lives.
One good hint: Before you redo all your hinges buy several different styles and finishes and put them on them in various parts of the kitchen. You can then get a sense of which works best for you from the standpoint of design and décor before going through the effort of replacing all the cabinet door hinges in the home.
If you have an overlay door you will need pivot hinges. One is attached to the top and the other to the bottom of a door, and portions of each are recessed into the door and frame creating a concealed hinge. Flush doors commonly use butterfly hinges. These hinges are so named because they look like a butterfly when opened. They consist of two flaps with screw holes held together by a pin. They mount on the outside of the door and jamb or frame for a unique decorative look. You;ll find them in multiple styles ranging from colonial to art deco and beyond to suit your personal taste.
They type of hinge you choose depends on the type of door you have as well as your tastes. There are three types of door, lipped, overlay and flush. Lipped doors have a lip around them, an overlay door rests on the door frame and a flush door rests within the frame. If you have an overlay door a popular hinge that works well is the pivot hinge. A decorative butterfly hinge works well on flush doors while some hinges work on all three types. A well-liked hinge that works on all doors is the spring loaded hinge. This hinge has a spring in it that makes the door close all by itself. Once you find the right hinge your project will be complete.
In existence for thousands of years, hinges have come a long way to finally reach their status of today. Early versions involved large boulders and pivots, later evolving into wooden planks and animal hide. Regardless of how humble their beginnings may have been, getting through life without them today would definitely be much more difficult.
Pivot hinges are made for overlay doors which are doors that rest over the door frame. One is attached to the top and one to the bottom. Portions of each are then folded over and recessed into the door and frame resulting in a concealed hinge. If open cabinets are a pet peeve of yours then the ever popular spring-loaded or self-closing hinge is for you. Built with a small spring inside the door automatically closes after it is opened. You;ll never be annoyed by open cabinets again.
Squeaks happen. They"re natural, but that doesn"t mean you have to live with them. When you first hear the squeaky door hinge, you need to decide what is causing it. Maybe it really does need some grease. Squirt a little WD40 in there and see if that solves the problem. If not, maybe one of the screws has come a little loose. Grab a screw driver and tighten them up to see if that makes a difference. Only tighten them as far as they need to go, don"t keep twisting thinking you"ll make it stop squeaking if you tighten the screw enough, that"s only going to hurt your cabinet surface. If these solutions don"t work, it"s time to go on a hunt for replacement hinges.
