When it comes to cabinet door hinges the right ones depend on the type of door you have. Basically there are three types of doors lipped, overlay and flush. The lipped door is one in which a lip has been cut completely around the door. The overlay door is cut larger than the opening so that its edges rest on the door frame. Flush doors sit inside the frame with their faces flush within it. Each type of door dictates different types of hinges.
Meanwhile, if you are retrofitting existing cabinets, you need to make sure the cabinet hinges you buy will allow the doors to open and close smoothly and correctly. While you may look at them in the store and think they are close enough, the best way to really find out is to try them out. You may want to get a few different designs and experiment to see which ones suit you best, before you spend a lot of money to purchase enough cabinet hinges to replace all the ones in the room.
So if your idea of a good time is to repeatedly take a door off of its hinges before putting it back in place, then the loose pin butt hinge may be the ideal companion for you.
Once you"ve decided on the big items like stainless steel appliances and granite countertops it is important not to forget the little things that make your kitchen complete. Cabinet hardware can make or break the look you just spent so much money to achieve.
Sometimes it is the smallest of things that make the biggest difference. Look at the hinge for instance. Some say it is the greatest invention after the wheel. It is used every day in every home and we couldn;t live without them.
These simple ones were called pivot hinges and consisted of a post that fits into a ring or a socket. If you put a post on the top and bottom of each door and a socket in the floor and top of the doorframe, you have a simple door that swings open both ways. Other mountings of them stop the door at a certain point. An example of an ancient pivot hinged door with a stop is a drawbridge. Two massive pivot hinges were mounted on the bottom outside corners of the castle; chains raised the bridge into a door position which was then barred from the inside to hold it in place.
Most of today"s hinges developed from refinements of the basics of these simple designs. A common door hinge has open rings (sockets) on both the door and the frame and a pin (post) that runs through the rings. If that sounds familiar, it;s because it still uses the basic physics of the original pivot hinge developed over 3500 years ago.
