Adding personality and an ornamental value to your cabinet doors, decorative hinges are available in different finishes that will complement your cabinetry. Black, gold, silver, and pewter finishes can serve to accent the color of your cabinet woods, as well as drawer pulls and cabinet handles or knobs. A variety of sizes are also available.
Some are shaped like butterflies and others you can;t even see. Some open with a pivot and others close automatically. There are many types of cabinet door hinge available, but we often don;t even look at them in our own homes. We should because without them our daily lives would be harder.
By and large one of the most important inventions for everyday use isn;t very large at all. Because of cabinet door hinges we are able to store things away behind doors that previously would have been on shelves. Although originally used in 1600 B.C., the Romans adapted the hinge for home use. Flash forward to the American colonies and hinges were used everywhere. Eventually they were outfitted for the doors of wagons heading west most prominently by Charles Hager in St. Louis. He founded the present day Hager Hardware Company and in the 1900;s received a patent for the compact butt hinge and the rest as they say is history.
The pivot hinge is made for overlay doors. One is mounted on the top and the other on the bottom with portions of each bent over and mounted to the frame and door resulting in a concealed hinge. Perhaps the most popular hinge is the spring mounted hinge. Fitted with a small spring inside this door hinge allows the door to close on its own, automatically.
Most of today"s hinges developed from refinements of the basics of these simple designs. A common door hinge has open rings (sockets) on both the door and the frame and a pin (post) that runs through the rings. If that sounds familiar, it;s because it still uses the basic physics of the original pivot hinge developed over 3500 years ago.
Spring-loaded ones will keep your doors (windows, lids, etc.) shut. This will give your doors a mind of their own and keep next door;s cat out of your kitchen. Remember that some of them have almost become fashion accessories, at least within a house. Select each hinge with care, so as to match color, material and function with doors and decoration.
Most doors today are sold pre-hung, with hinges on them, when you get a new door it usually comes with factory standard door hinges. If you are remodeling you want to make sure the new door hinges fit the style of all the other ones in the house. Thankfully they are easy to swap out. The holes for door hinges are usually standard as long as you buy the same size that you had previously.
