No matter what type of door is being installed, a hinge of some type is necessary. Hinge designs include butt hinges, spring hinges, geared continuous hinges and a myriad of utility hinge designs. Which one you purchase depends on the location and function of the door. A quality hinge provides long-lasting functionality which saves in repair costs and time.
Every morning you probably open and close at least five doors before you leave t o go to work. You close the bathroom door to jump in the shower. You open the medicine cabinet to get your toothbrush and toothpaste. You reach for your cereal to grab a quick bite to eat and the front door swings shut behind you before you leave. All of these doors and more would not work without a door hinge or two. And what would the world be like without this oh so important invention? Well picture going into and out of your house through a hole in the roof because you are no strong enough o move a large rock or slab of wood everyday in front of the entrance.
Consider your daily activity. You get out of bed in the morning and head for the bathroom door, which is suspended on hinges. You open the door of the medicine cabinet (hinged) and take out your pillbox (hinged). Reaching for the vanity cabinet, you open the hinged door to take a towel for your shower, the door of which is most likely hinged. Already, in just those few moments, you have relied on the invisible hinges several times to accomplish your morning tasks.
Ancient pivot hinges wore out and were subsequently reinforced with metal. Eventually they were made only of metal. As advances in metallurgy made metal stronger, they could carry heavier loads. They were also advancing by being downsized and used in homes; on doors, trunks, and boxes.
By the beginning of the Common Era, Romans were the most proficient with hinges and had downsized the hinge from a massive piece of hardware to on that would work inside the home on cabinet doors and boxes. The Egyptians, Assyrians, and Babylonians were also using hinges, but they were not as sophisticated as the Roman hinges, nor as sized down, and they were most always used for large doorways and other entryways such as city gates. No one knows when pivot hinges evolved to the strap hinges of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, but that evolution brought hinges one giant step closer to the hinges of today.
Pivot hinges are made for overlay doors which are doors that rest over the door frame. One is attached to the top and one to the bottom. Portions of each are then folded over and recessed into the door and frame resulting in a concealed hinge. If open cabinets are a pet peeve of yours then the ever popular spring-loaded or self-closing hinge is for you. Built with a small spring inside the door automatically closes after it is opened. You;ll never be annoyed by open cabinets again.
The squeaky wheel may get the grease, but a squeaky hinge on your cabinets may result in you shopping for replacement hinges. If you keep your kitchen up, looking like a show model all the time, there is not much more annoying than the kitchen seeming to mock you, by squeaking each time you open a cabinet.
