If you go with hidden hinges, the chances are good you are looking to simply replace the cabinet hinges you already have. In this case you want to make sure that you buy ones that are similar to the ones you have already been using because how they are fitted to the wood is specific to a particular type of cabinet hinges.
By the beginning of the Common Era, Romans were the most proficient with hinges and had downsized the hinge from a massive piece of hardware to on that would work inside the home on cabinet doors and boxes. The Egyptians, Assyrians, and Babylonians were also using hinges, but they were not as sophisticated as the Roman hinges, nor as sized down, and they were most always used for large doorways and other entryways such as city gates. No one knows when pivot hinges evolved to the strap hinges of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, but that evolution brought hinges one giant step closer to the hinges of today.
Ancient pivot hinges wore out and were subsequently reinforced with metal. Eventually they were made only of metal. As advances in metallurgy made metal stronger, they could carry heavier loads. They were also advancing by being downsized and used in homes; on doors, trunks, and boxes.
Flush cabinet doors are often seen with butterfly hinges. These cabinet hinges consist of two flaps or leaves with screw holes held together by a pin. They are mounted on the outside of the door and frame and look like a butterfly when open; hence the name. These cabinet hinges are ornamental and can add style to any room form colonial to art deco and beyond. A cabinet hinge similar to this is a butt hinge only the flaps are recessed into the door and frame revealing only the pin when closed. Balls or finials can be added to the pin for decoration. The butt hinge can be used on any door.
Door hinges well may be the most under appreciated items in your home. Think about it, how often do you think about your door hinges? You probably only really notice them when they begin squeaking or creaking. You notice them even more when they start to frustrate you because no matter how much WD40 you have, it isn;t going to stop your hinges from failing. Unfortunately door hinges getting old and squeaking and creaking is a part of life. Its just time passing.
There are several types of door hinge available. The most common is the butt hinge. This consists of two flaps with screw holes attached by a pin or a rod. To take the door down all you would have to do is remove the pins. You can choose to add finials or balls to the pins for a decorative touch.
The squeaky wheel may get the grease, but a squeaky hinge on your cabinets may result in you shopping for replacement hinges. If you keep your kitchen up, looking like a show model all the time, there is not much more annoying than the kitchen seeming to mock you, by squeaking each time you open a cabinet.
