Flush cabinet doors are often seen with butterfly hinges. These cabinet hinges consist of two flaps or leaves with screw holes held together by a pin. They are mounted on the outside of the door and frame and look like a butterfly when open; hence the name. These cabinet hinges are ornamental and can add style to any room form colonial to art deco and beyond. A cabinet hinge similar to this is a butt hinge only the flaps are recessed into the door and frame revealing only the pin when closed. Balls or finials can be added to the pin for decoration. The butt hinge can be used on any door.
No matter what type of cabinet door hinge and finish you choose you should be happy with the results. A cabinet door hinge may be small and it may be overlooked, but without them we wouldn;t have cabinets, we would simply have shelves. And sometimes things are better left hidden behind closed doors.
There are several types of door hinge available. The most common is the butt hinge. This consists of two flaps with screw holes attached by a pin or a rod. To take the door down all you would have to do is remove the pins. You can choose to add finials or balls to the pins for a decorative touch.
Butt hinges are the most familiar hinge style to most people and are found on every type of interior and exterior door. When selecting a butt hinge, consider the weight of the door and the level of usage. You"ll find products in steel, brass and bronze rated from standard to heavy duty and with two, three or five knuckles.
Other types of hinges include the knuckle hinge. Its advantages are that it is both strong and decorative. It makes a good hinge for an outside door which is typically heavier than an inside door. In addition to this it gives your outside door pizzazz and makes the neighbors gawk.
If dealing with cabinet doors the type of hinge you use will depend on the door type. There are three door types; lipped, flush and overlay. A lipped door has a lip cut around it and works well with most hinges. A flush door rests within the frame and works well with butterfly hinges. A butterfly hinge works like a butt hinge but is hung on the outside and is more ornamental ranging in styles from colonial to art deco.
Hinges are generally eight to ten times stronger than the job they are assigned. So if your front door was off its hinges you have to have the strength to move it yourself. That is why before the hinge was in use many people entered their homes by climbing up a ladder and going through a hole in the roof.
