A hinge, in itself, is a work of simplicity; simply a joint that connects two objects; easy to understand, easy to install and easy to use. While many types of hinges are hidden, just as many are openly functional, and can actually be decorative.
But hinges are one of the most common types of cabinet door hinges available. They consist of two leaves or flaps with screw holes that are held together by a pin. The flaps are recessed into the door and frame so when the cabinet is closed all that is visible is the hinge. The pin can be outfitted with balls or finials for a decorative touch.
Typically the type of cabinet door hinge you need is dictated by the type of cabinet door you have. There are three types of cabinet door; lipped, flush and overlay. A lipped door has a lip cut all the way around it. A flush door rests within the door frame and an overlay door rests on the door frame.
So you"ve decided to give your kitchen a facelift. You"ve decided on a paint color, picked out a new counter top and are re-facing your cabinets. Heck you might even throw in a new fridge or range.
Some say the hinge is the second most important invention, the wheel being the first. A hinge cabinet or otherwise is generally eight to ten times stronger than its assigned job. So imagine for a moment if hinges had not been invented. Our things would be or shelves for all to see or we use large rocks or hunks of wood to act as a door.
If you go with hidden hinges, the chances are good you are looking to simply replace the cabinet hinges you already have. In this case you want to make sure that you buy ones that are similar to the ones you have already been using because how they are fitted to the wood is specific to a particular type of cabinet hinges.
There a lot of different hinges on the market today. They vary in size, thickness and use. Some are even marked left or right handed depending on what side of the door you are going to use them on. This doesn;t really matter though because you can simply flip them over and they become left or right handed as needed. You also really can"t go to small because of the strength of hinges. They are generally eight to ten times stronger than the job they are doing so as long as they are proportional to the door you needn;t worry.
