Makeup compacts open with them. Your cell phone flips open with a spring-loaded hinge. Clip earrings rely on hinges. So do eyeglasses. The laptop I am writing this on opens with two of them. Some purses have hinge clasps; others have straps attached with hinges. Toolboxes, briefcases, humidors. Kitchen tongs, can openers, coffee pots. Copiers have about a bazillion hinges; every time you open a door or flip a part up to free a paper jam, you are using a hinge or two.
When it comes to cabinet door hinges the right ones depend on the type of door you have. Basically there are three types of doors lipped, overlay and flush. The lipped door is one in which a lip has been cut completely around the door. The overlay door is cut larger than the opening so that its edges rest on the door frame. Flush doors sit inside the frame with their faces flush within it. Each type of door dictates different types of hinges.
For example if you want a sleek and modern kitchen you would not want traditional cabinet door hinges or decorative hinges that will take away from the streamlined look you worked so hard to achieve. You also want yours to match your knobs and pulls in finish and style.
Door hinges have a thankless job. For most of their mundane lives, they simply swing back and forth, holding the door securely in its frame. Occasionally, they strain as children swing back and forth on the door handles. Other times, they shudder to a sudden stop as a door is thoughtlessly slammed.
If you have an overlay door you will need pivot hinges. One is attached to the top and the other to the bottom of a door, and portions of each are recessed into the door and frame creating a concealed hinge. Flush doors commonly use butterfly hinges. These hinges are so named because they look like a butterfly when opened. They consist of two flaps with screw holes held together by a pin. They mount on the outside of the door and jamb or frame for a unique decorative look. You;ll find them in multiple styles ranging from colonial to art deco and beyond to suit your personal taste.
When you are shopping for door hinges to use, you may find yourself marveling at all the designs on the market, but you need to keep a few details in mind. There are two choices in door hinges - removable pin or fixed pin. Which one you want will depend on if you ever need to take the door off. Removable pin doors allow you pop the door down should you need to do something like move a piece of furniture through a doorway that is a little too skinny for the furniture pieces. Also make sure to look at how your door hinges are currently constructed and that any bolt on the new door hinges won;t interfere with your molding.
Spring-loaded ones will keep your doors (windows, lids, etc.) shut. This will give your doors a mind of their own and keep next door;s cat out of your kitchen. Remember that some of them have almost become fashion accessories, at least within a house. Select each hinge with care, so as to match color, material and function with doors and decoration.
