Depending on your tastes, cabinet hinges can be as prominent or as subtle as you want them to be. Some people prefer smaller cabinet hinges that are attached on the inside of the cabinet leaving just a small peek of the hinge area to show. They may be made in a variety of different metals to give a little touch of contrast to your overall cabinetry appearance. If you are working on a rustic or country look, you should look for strap cabinet hinges, or other large cabinet hinges that go on the outside of the cabinet. These are available from simple black designs to beautifully ornate pieces that seem as if they may have come from a palace. This style of cabinet hinges can really dress up the doors you are putting them on, making what had been ordinary cabinets suddenly look like they"re expensive, custom-made jobs.
There are several types of door hinge available. The most common is the butt hinge. This consists of two flaps with screw holes attached by a pin or a rod. To take the door down all you would have to do is remove the pins. You can choose to add finials or balls to the pins for a decorative touch.
Pivot hinges are made for overlay doors which are doors that rest over the door frame. One is attached to the top and one to the bottom. Portions of each are then folded over and recessed into the door and frame resulting in a concealed hinge. If open cabinets are a pet peeve of yours then the ever popular spring-loaded or self-closing hinge is for you. Built with a small spring inside the door automatically closes after it is opened. You;ll never be annoyed by open cabinets again.
Over a glass of wine with friends, an architect friend of mine and I started talking about hinges. And yes, I know you are thinking what an exciting conversation that must have been. But when you think about it, hinges are everywhere and affect all aspects of our lives. In fact, you probably have at least five hinged items on your person or in your purse/attaché/backpack/briefcase. You might have less, but I think you;ll be surprised as you read on.
When it comes to cabinet door hinges the right ones depend on the type of door you have. Basically there are three types of doors lipped, overlay and flush. The lipped door is one in which a lip has been cut completely around the door. The overlay door is cut larger than the opening so that its edges rest on the door frame. Flush doors sit inside the frame with their faces flush within it. Each type of door dictates different types of hinges.
There a lot of different hinges on the market today. They vary in size, thickness and use. Some are even marked left or right handed depending on what side of the door you are going to use them on. This doesn;t really matter though because you can simply flip them over and they become left or right handed as needed. You also really can"t go to small because of the strength of hinges. They are generally eight to ten times stronger than the job they are doing so as long as they are proportional to the door you needn;t worry.
In existence for thousands of years, hinges have come a long way to finally reach their status of today. Early versions involved large boulders and pivots, later evolving into wooden planks and animal hide. Regardless of how humble their beginnings may have been, getting through life without them today would definitely be much more difficult.
