The most basic hinge, the pivot hinge, was in use in by 1600 BCE (Before Common Era), based on archeological evidence from the ancient city of Hattusa. The pivot hinge is simply a post that rests in a socket or ring of stone, wood, or metal. This basic hinge design allows a door to swing fully open in both directions, or be blocked on one side to stop. Because of this feature, pivot hinges have been passed down through history and are still around everywhere, though in slightly fancier form. Saloon-style doors and bathroom stall doors are often mounted by pivot hinges.
No matter what type of cabinet door hinge and finish you choose you should be happy with the results. A cabinet door hinge may be small and it may be overlooked, but without them we wouldn;t have cabinets, we would simply have shelves. And sometimes things are better left hidden behind closed doors.
For example if you want a sleek and modern kitchen you would not want traditional cabinet door hinges or decorative hinges that will take away from the streamlined look you worked so hard to achieve. You also want yours to match your knobs and pulls in finish and style.
They type of hinge you choose depends on the type of door you have as well as your tastes. There are three types of door, lipped, overlay and flush. Lipped doors have a lip around them, an overlay door rests on the door frame and a flush door rests within the frame. If you have an overlay door a popular hinge that works well is the pivot hinge. A decorative butterfly hinge works well on flush doors while some hinges work on all three types. A well-liked hinge that works on all doors is the spring loaded hinge. This hinge has a spring in it that makes the door close all by itself. Once you find the right hinge your project will be complete.
Adjustable spring hinges are also available in steel, brass and bronze. This type of hinge is less expensive than an automatic door closer for interior doors of hospitals, schools, hotels and other commercial buildings.
When selecting new hinges, you want to keep a few things in mind. First, what;s the style of your kitchen? Is it modern, traditional, country or retro? What kind do you have now and what hinges would not only look good, but also properly support the door so it doesn;t sag or even fail over the time. Too weak of hinges and you"ll always be straightening the door. This can become maddening very quickly.
On the other hand, if you have exposed hinges, you have a lot more choice when it comes to changing them out.
