Makeup compacts open with them. Your cell phone flips open with a spring-loaded hinge. Clip earrings rely on hinges. So do eyeglasses. The laptop I am writing this on opens with two of them. Some purses have hinge clasps; others have straps attached with hinges. Toolboxes, briefcases, humidors. Kitchen tongs, can openers, coffee pots. Copiers have about a bazillion hinges; every time you open a door or flip a part up to free a paper jam, you are using a hinge or two.
Flush cabinet doors are often seen with butterfly hinges. These cabinet hinges consist of two flaps or leaves with screw holes held together by a pin. They are mounted on the outside of the door and frame and look like a butterfly when open; hence the name. These cabinet hinges are ornamental and can add style to any room form colonial to art deco and beyond. A cabinet hinge similar to this is a butt hinge only the flaps are recessed into the door and frame revealing only the pin when closed. Balls or finials can be added to the pin for decoration. The butt hinge can be used on any door.
In the morning when you reach for your toothbrush or the cereal, do you ever think about what is holding these cabinet doors in place? A cabinet hinge is often overlooked and taken for granted, but its significance in our daily lives should not be missed.
If dealing with cabinet doors the type of hinge you use will depend on the door type. There are three door types; lipped, flush and overlay. A lipped door has a lip cut around it and works well with most hinges. A flush door rests within the frame and works well with butterfly hinges. A butterfly hinge works like a butt hinge but is hung on the outside and is more ornamental ranging in styles from colonial to art deco.
One good hint: Before you redo all your hinges buy several different styles and finishes and put them on them in various parts of the kitchen. You can then get a sense of which works best for you from the standpoint of design and décor before going through the effort of replacing all the cabinet door hinges in the home.
Daily we encounter and use items that become so normal, so automatic that we don"t even realize they exist. Hinges make our lives so much easier on so many levels, and yet are almost invisible in their efficiency.
As you look for replacement hinges there are a few things to keep in mind. If the door hinges you are replacing are from a cabinet, do you want to change all the cabinet hinges out? If not, you need to look for replacement hinges that match the ones you removed, or you will have a tacky set of cabinets where everyone knows which ones are the replacement hinges. If its individual door replacement hinges you"re looking for, you have a little more flexibility, but still want to make sure the hinges you select go with the rest of the room décor.
