Some say the hinge is the second most important invention, the wheel being the first. A hinge cabinet or otherwise is generally eight to ten times stronger than its assigned job. So imagine for a moment if hinges had not been invented. Our things would be or shelves for all to see or we use large rocks or hunks of wood to act as a door.
Because visible cabinet door hinges are, well, always visible, they become expected and common place over time. Eventually, you don"t even notice them anymore. At least until they become unhinged as noted above.
So look around as you go about your daily tasks for those seemingly unimportant hinges that make your everyday steps so much easier. And while you"re at it, take a look at where you can update and add extra decorative touches with new decorative hinges.
Pivot hinges, one of the most popular styles, are designed for overlay doors. One hinge is mounted on top the other on the bottom with portions of each screwed into the frame resulting in a concealed hinge.
These simple ones were called pivot hinges and consisted of a post that fits into a ring or a socket. If you put a post on the top and bottom of each door and a socket in the floor and top of the doorframe, you have a simple door that swings open both ways. Other mountings of them stop the door at a certain point. An example of an ancient pivot hinged door with a stop is a drawbridge. Two massive pivot hinges were mounted on the bottom outside corners of the castle; chains raised the bridge into a door position which was then barred from the inside to hold it in place.
Some people don;t like to see their hinge at all. In this case they should invest in Soss or Blum hinges. They are recessed into to the door and frame so they are completely concealed when the door closes. There are also gate hinges for gates and piano hinges which are continuous hinges used on pianos and other things that you want to open completely.
One of the most common types of hinge is the butt hinge. It consists of two flaps with screw holes held together by a pin or rod. It is most often used on doors and cabinets. Another common type of hinge is the t-strap hinge. This hinge is shaped like the letter T with the horizontal part attaching to the frame and the vertical part attaching to the door. This type of hinge is usually seen on garage doors and box or chest lids and can be decorative. It ranges in styles from colonial to art deco and beyond.
