Celebrity can be a straitjacket or a crown, depending on the disposition of the celebrated. For Jake Gyllenhaal, no stranger to the dossiers of the paparazzi and Tinseltown, pictured here and there hand-in-hand with his current co-star, Reese Witherspoon, it is worn lightly and flaunted when necessary.
His latest film is Rendition, as unwavering a political statement as Brokeback Mountain was a cultural one.
As with the Oscar-winning Brokeback, in which Gyllenhaal co-starred with the late Heath Ledger, Rendition is about a practice whose name can scarcely be spoken, although in this case, that is by government decree.
