Joe Namath was larger than life. He was a highly-touted high school prospect who starred for Bear Bryant at Alabama, took New York City by storm and led the New York Jets of the upstart AFL to a Super Bowl victory he had brashly guaranteed.
Jake Gyllenhaal is slated to play Joe Namath, seen here during the Jets’ Super Bowl III win, in a film about the Hall of Fame quarterback’s life. Sounds like a good idea for a movie.
Good enough that Universal Studios will make a movie about the Hall of Fame quarterback, with Jake Gyllenhaal playing Broadway Joe, according to reports.
The film will recount Namath’s journey from Beaver Falls, Pa. to Alabama to New York, where Jets owner Sonny Werblin bet a then unheard-of $400,000 on Namath giving the struggling Jets and the AFL instant credibility. “Broadway Joe” became a sports hero, a celebrity pitchman and a sex symbol in New York as the Jets won Super Bowl III.
“Most of the stuff you saw in ‘Forest Gump,’ Joe lived through all of it,” executive producer Jimmy Walsh said, according to Variety.
Variety reported that David Hollander will write the script once the writers’ strike ends, with Andrew Lazar producing and Walsh as executive producer. According to the report, Namath and Walsh signed off on the project partially because they believed Gyllenhaal was the right actor to play Namath.
Reese Witherspoon has turned down a marriage proposal from Jake Gyllenhaal, according to a report. The US actress was apparently not sure about re-marrying so soon after her divorce from Ryan Philippe, claims The National Enquirer.
A source commented: “Reese says it is just too soon after her divorce from Ryan to think about marrying again.She is madly in love with Jake, but her divorce just became final, and she doesn’t want to rush into anything. Reese wants to take things very slowly because of her two young children. She doesn’t want anything to upset or disrupt them. It took her a while to introduce them to Jake - she didn’t want them to know they were a couple until they were definitely serious about each other.
Witherspoon and Gyllenhaal met each other while filming ‘Rendition’ earlier this year.”

The film “Brothers”, starring Natalie Portman, Tobey Maguire, and Jake Gyllenhaal is having an open casting call for extras Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007 from 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Santa Fe, 4048 Cerrillos Rd.
Producers are looking for hundreds of men, women and children, all ages and types, to work as paid extras in the film. The movie is directed by Jim Sheridan (”Get Rich or Die Tryin’”, “In America”, “In the Name of the Father”, “The Boxer”)
Filming begins in the Santa Fe area at the end of November and continues through January, 2008

“Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon were on my flight from SFO to Burbank Monday afternoon. They sat very far away from the gate and of course, kept their sunglasses on the whole time. At one point, I saw him put his head on her shoulder while she stroked his back. Once everyone was on-board except for us stragglers, they snuck in through the United VIP line. Honestly, with no bodyguards or hangers-on, they made more of a production of themselves, looking completely sullen and put-upon in that totally obvious “Don’t you dare look at me, I’m famous” way. Like, one girl recognized them and didn’t really seem to care, and most people just wondered who the tools in the sunglasses were. Once I was in line to board, I got stuck behind Jake as he tried to load his bag in the overhead bin. But once he saw that a girl in her 20s was standing right behind him, he totally dropped the bag, sat down, and kinda covered his face.”
LOS ANGELES, California?Perhaps Jake Gyllenhaal was just in a joking mood. Or maybe, because his mom, scriptwriter Naomi Foner, was around, he wanted to keep the press con light.
Jake always gives humor-tinged interviews, but on this particular Sunday morning, he was especially funny. Even on the few answers that he managed to be somewhat serious, he couldn’t help but end them with amusing quips.
When told that sometimes people mistake his acclaimed film, “Brokeback Mountain,” for Robert Duvall’s made-for-TV movie, “Broken Trail,” he disclosed that both movies employed the same make-up artist. Then, he quipped: #8220;And that was Duvall’s mustache I wore in ‘Brokeback.’”
Jake’s impressive acting career is, of course, no joke. He’s one of the finest

Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal will be in the state until the end of the year filming “Brothers.”
The movie tells the story of a man sent to fight in Afghanistan while his black-sheep brother takes care of the soldier’s wife and children. It is produce by Relativity Media and Michael De Luca. Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father) will direct.
About 250 crew members and more than 1,000 actors are expected to work on the production. It will filmed in Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Las Vegas, Abiquiu and Glorieta.
